Relocation checklist: How to make a successful relocation

Relocation checklist

Relocating to a new country is a big adventure – and comes with a few hurdles. Prime Relocation supports you in arriving in Switzerland with as little stress as possible. Based on our many years of experience, we have created a relocation checklist to make your move as smooth as possible

Before relocation: the decision-making process

Will I feel comfortable in the new country? Can my place of work also become a home for my family? Is the new job worth the effort of a fresh start? These and many other questions probably go through your mind when you are thinking about relocating. To gain more certainty and dispel any doubts, it is advisable to make an orientation visit to Switzerland first.

At Prime Relocation, we offer customised exploratory tours to familiarise you with life and culture in Switzerland. Our local experts with relocation experience will cover the most important aspects of a new start and answer any questions you may have, such as:

  • Cost of living
  • Situation on the housing market
  • School and childcare facilities
  • Leisure activities
  • Visa requirements and other formalities (insurance etc.)

Relocation checklist: Say goodbye to your old home

Before you start again, you must of course prepare your departure and observe all relevant notice periods. In our experience, you should go through the following relocation checklist before you start again:

  • Applying for a visa
  • Deregistration in the country of origin
  • Cancellation of the tenancy or sale/letting of the property
  • Cancellation of local contracts such as electricity, internet, bank, insurance, etc.
  • Deregistration and organisation of the transfer of vehicles
  • Notarisation of certificates and documents
  • Creating forwarding orders
  • Clarifying import regulations
  • Organising and preparing the move (organising move boxes and adhesive tape, packing etc.)
  • Clarify the introduction of pets

Prime Relocation can already assist you with these tasks in the so-called “Month before the Move”. We will be happy to assist you with the visa formalities for you and your family. In addition, you can have us organise the move – if you have already found it, even directly to your new home in Switzerland. Simply let us know your moving dates. In addition, we are of course available to advise you on all formal and legal issues and on the Move Checklist and relevant Valuables and Important Documents.

Relocation checklist: Finding accommodation in Switzerland

Having your own home is an important basis for feeling at home in your new country. That’s why finding accommodation should be one of the top priorities on your relocation checklist. This involves the following tasks:

  • Deciding on a place of residence / location
  • Search for the right property
  • Negotiate and sign a rental or purchase agreement (rental agreement)
  • Registering the address
  • Registering water, electricity, gas, waste, internet etc.
  • Relocation
  • Furnishing

Looking for a new home can take up a lot of time and energy. That’s why the support of our relocation agency is particularly valuable for our clients. We know the Swiss housing market and can advise you on the right location and the peculiarities of the property market. We use our network to put you in contact with sellers and landlords so that you can quickly find the right property to rent or buy.

You can also delegate all formal and organisational tasks relating to your move to us. We will be happy to take care of all registrations for electricity, gas etc. and, if you wish, even the complete furnishing of your new home for you. So you can arrive on Moving Day right away. If you want to do the furnishing yourself, we will put you in touch with contacts for furniture stores, craftsmen and interior designers.

We also give you time to find your dream home: In a temporary flat, you can take your time looking for a property and save on hotel costs.

Relocation checklist: Formalities

Unfortunately, moving to another country involves a lot of bureaucracy. The following formalities are particularly important:

  • Visa
  • Work permit, possibly also for partners
  • Health insurance (within three months)
  • Other insurances such as liability, household contents, legal
  • protection, etc.
  • Open a bank account
  • Change your driving licence (within one year)
  • Register the vehicle

Don’t be put off by the bureaucratic hurdles. Prime Relocation will help you complete all the formalities so that you can start your new job and new life in Switzerland without any worries.

Relocation checklist: Arrive and feel at home

Move and have a good time: organisational and bureaucratic issues often play the biggest role in relocation. But it takes more than that to really feel at home in Switzerland. Don’t neglect the following aspects of your relocation:

  • Finding a daycare centre and school
  • extracurricular activities
  • Leisure activities (gym, places to go out, etc.)
  • Doctors

With Prime Relocation, you have a well-connected partner at your side. We will support you in your search for the right childcare or school place for your children, provide you with suitable contacts for extracurricular activities, know where the nearest gym is and help you to make new friends locally. Because we are convinced that a relocation checklist has only been completed when you really feel at home in Switzerland.
